A warranty commits the manufacturer or supplier to fix or replace an asset if it fails within the warranty period, subject to its terms. Related service contracts (or maintenance agreements) cover servicing and repairs for a fee, often after the warranty ends.
Why it matters
Organizations routinely pay for repairs that were covered, simply because nobody knew the asset was still under warranty — or which supplier to call. Tracking warranties also informs lifecycle decisions: an expiring warranty on an ageing, failure-prone asset is a natural moment to consider replacement.
What to record
- Start and end date
- Provider and contact
- What is covered (parts, labor, on-site, loan units)
- Conditions — for example documented servicing
- Contract number and documents
