A work order (WO) is the unit of maintenance work. It starts as a request or a scheduled PM task, is assigned to a person or team, and is closed when the job is done — capturing what was found, what was done, time spent, parts used and cost.

Typical fields

  • Asset and location
  • Type — preventive, corrective, inspection, calibration
  • Description and task list
  • Priority and due date
  • Assignee
  • Status — open, in progress, on hold, completed
  • Labor, parts and cost
  • Findings and follow-up

Why it matters

Work orders make maintenance visible and accountable. Closed work orders become the asset's service history, which drives MTBF, MTTR, cost-to-date and repair-or-replace decisions.

Example
WO-3317 · Conveyor 2B · Corrective · High · Replace drive-end bearing · 1.5 h · Bearing 6205 ×1 · Completed 11:40.
