Asset tag quantity calculator
Work out how many asset tags to order — your assets, tags per asset and a replacement allowance, rounded up to the pack size your supplier sells.
Your roll-out
Formula: ⌈(assets + new assets) × tags per asset⌉ + ⌈base × allowance⌉, rounded up to whole packs. Tags left over from rounding become extra spares.
- Order on-metal (anti-metal) variants for metal assets — standard RFID and NFC tags read poorly directly on metal.
- Test a sample of tags on your real assets and surfaces before committing to a full roll.
- For RFID, keep EPC ranges on the order so tags can be received into stock and activated without duplicates.
- Not sure which technology to use? Try the RFID vs QR vs NFC selector.
How to calculate how many asset tags to order
Four steps. Every number is an input you control, and nothing leaves your browser.
Enter how many assets you will tag in this roll-out.
Enter how many tags each asset carries on average (usually 1).
Set a spare allowance for misprints, damage and new assets.
Enter the pack size to see how many packs and tags to order.
What you need to know
Ordering exactly one tag per asset almost always leaves you short. Labels get misprinted, damaged during application, peeled off equipment in harsh environments, or needed for assets that arrive after the roll-out. This calculator adds a replacement allowance on top of your base requirement and rounds up to whole packs, so your first order covers the project and the months after it.
Start with the number of assets you will tag and how many tags each carries — most assets need one, but some organisations put a QR label and a UHF RFID tag on the same item so it can be scanned by phone and read in bulk. Then set your spare allowance. The default of 10% is a planning assumption, not a rule: indoor office equipment may need less, while outdoor, on-metal or heavy-use assets may need more. Finally, enter the pack size to see how many packs to buy.
In Asetavo a single asset can hold several active tags of different types, tag orders and tag stock are tracked alongside the register, and a duplicate or cloned RFID EPC is rejected when a tag is assigned.
