Every asset in a register has a location. The most useful way to express it is a location hierarchy — for example, Property › Building › Floor › Room — so an asset's location is both precise ("Room 312") and easy to roll up ("everything in Building B").
Why it matters
- People can find the asset.
- Audits can be scoped by area, and missing items traced to where they were last recorded.
- Zones and movement rules are built from locations.
- Reports by site or building support insurance, tax and space planning.
Recorded vs actual location
The register holds the recorded location. It is only as good as the last update — which is why location changes should be captured by scans, check-outs or readers rather than typed from memory, and why regular stock-takes verify it.
