What is asset movement?

Also known as: asset transfer, movement history, asset relocation.

Definition

An asset movement is any recorded change in an asset’s location or custody, with who, when and from where — building its movement history.

An asset movement is an event: this asset went from A to B (or from person X to person Y) at a particular time, recorded by a particular user or reader. The sequence of movements is the asset's movement history — the evidence you need when something goes missing.

Planned vs unplanned movement

Planned movements are transfers someone intended and recorded — relocating a printer, issuing a laptop, sending a tool to another site. Unplanned movements are detected rather than declared, typically by a reader at a doorway, and may be perfectly fine or may be the first sign of loss. Distinguishing the two is what movement alerts are for.

Example
Mon 08:40 — Laptop AST-2231 checked out to R. Achieng (Finance).
Thu 17:55 — Read leaving the building at the main-entrance portal.
Both are movements; the second may be fine (she is working from home) or not — the history lets you check.
