What is an audit trail?

Also known as: audit log, activity log, change history, tamper-evident log.

Definition

An audit trail is a chronological, attributed record of who did what and when — every change to an asset, setting or permission.

An audit trail records each significant action in a system: what changed, the old and new values, who made the change and when. A good one is append-only and tamper-evident — entries cannot be quietly edited or removed.

Why it matters

  • Accountability — every move, check-out, edit and disposal has a name against it.
  • Investigations — the history of a missing asset shows who had it last and where it was seen.
  • Compliance and financial audit — auditors rely on change history for assets and depreciation.
  • Error recovery — you can see what a record looked like before a mistake.
