What is location tracking?

Also known as: asset location tracking, indoor location.

Location tracking records where an asset is — as a site, building, room or zone, or as coordinates — and how that changes over time.

Location tracking is the part of asset tracking concerned with place. Location can be expressed symbolically — "HQ › Floor 3 › Room 312" — or geometrically, as coordinates from GPS or an indoor positioning system. For most organizations, symbolic locations tied to a clear location hierarchy are the most useful: they match how people actually talk about where things are.

How location gets captured

  • Manual — a user selects the new location when moving an asset.
  • Scan — scanning a location label and then an asset tag records the asset there.
  • Reader — a fixed RFID reader places the asset in the zone it covers.
  • Device — a GPS tracker reports coordinates.

Why it matters

Accurate location saves search time, makes audits faster (you know where to count) and is the basis for movement rules and alerts.
