GlossaryMaintenance

What is predictive maintenance?

Abbreviated as PdM. Also known as: PdM, condition-based maintenance, CBM, condition monitoring.

Definition

Predictive maintenance uses condition data — vibration, temperature, oil analysis — to service equipment when degradation appears, not on a fixed schedule.

Predictive maintenance (PdM) monitors the actual condition of equipment and triggers work when measurements show it is starting to degrade. Techniques include vibration analysis, infrared thermography, oil analysis, ultrasonic testing and motor current analysis, sometimes with continuous sensors and analytics.

Why it matters

Fixed PM intervals are a compromise: some assets are serviced too early, others still fail between services. PdM aims to intervene at the right moment — before failure, but not before it is needed.

Trade-offs

  • Requires sensors, measurement routes or specialist services
  • Needs expertise to interpret data
  • Most cost-effective on critical, high-value rotating equipment
Example
Monthly vibration readings on a pump show a rising bearing-fault signature; a bearing change is scheduled for the next planned stop instead of at the next fixed PM date.
