Depreciation methods, book and tax

Choose how each asset depreciates, and keep a separate tax schedule alongside book depreciation.

Updated Sep 28, 2026 · 3 min read
Prerequisites
The “finance” permission.
  1. Set category defaults

In Register → Categories, set each category’s default useful life and method.

  2. Override on an asset

On an asset’s Finance tab, add a depreciation profile. Methods: straight-line, reducing balance, double-declining, sum-of-years’ digits, units of production, MACRS (US), UK capital allowances, or none.

  3. Add a tax profile if you need one

Each asset can have one book profile and one tax profile. Tax schedules are for reporting only — they never change the asset’s net book value.

Questions

Not yet — units-of-production needs usage per period, which isn’t captured in a standard run, so it calculates zero until usage input is added.
