Capital cost allowance: what the CRA expects and what your register supplies

The Canada Revenue Agency explains that buildings, furniture and equipment used in a business may wear out or become obsolete, so their cost is deducted over several years through capital cost allowance (CCA). You cannot write off the full cost in the year of purchase. Property is grouped into classes, and the CRA publishes the common classes with a rate for each.

Your accountant prepares the CCA schedule by class. What they need from operations is a reliable list: what was acquired, in which class, at what cost, when it became available for use and when it was sold or scrapped. Asetavo keeps those facts on each asset and can run a reducing-balance tax profile at the rate your accountant confirms, next to the amortization used in your financial statements. Class pooling and rules such as the half-year rule stay with your accountant’s CCA working papers.

General information, not tax advice. Classes, rates and incentives change; check the CRA pages and your accountant before filing.

Canadian vocabulary

Amortization, tangible capital assets and the year-end count

  • Amortization: many private Canadian companies reporting under ASPE use this word where others say depreciation. Asetavo’s book profile does the same job whatever you call it.
  • Tangible capital assets (TCA): the term municipalities and other public-sector bodies use for roads, buildings, vehicles and equipment in their financial statements.
  • Capital asset register: the list behind the TCA schedule, with cost, location and condition for each item.
  • Year-end count: the physical verification before the auditors arrive, run in Asetavo as an audit scoped to a site, building or room (Growth and above).

Municipalities and school boards

Tangible capital asset listings for municipalities and school boards

Towns, regional districts and school boards keep long lists of vehicles, equipment, furniture and IT that feed their tangible capital asset reporting. Spreadsheets drift as items move between depots, schools and offices. Asetavo gives every item a tag, a location and a custodian, so the listing your finance team exports at year end matches the count your operations staff completed.

Asetavo records the information; it does not decide capitalization policy or certify compliance with public-sector accounting standards. Those stay with your treasurer and auditors.

Typical buyers

Where Canadian teams use an asset register

Health authorities and clinics

Shared equipment moves between sites; maintenance schedules and calibration dates sit on the same record as location.

Resource and field operations

Mining, energy and forestry crews take tools and equipment to remote sites. The phone apps (coming soon) work offline and sync when back in coverage.

Construction and trades

Tools and equipment are checked out to crews and returned to the yard, with a history of who held each item.

Universities and colleges

Lab and teaching equipment across faculties and buildings, counted room by room.

Currency

Canadian dollars in the register, US dollars on the invoice

Set your workspace currency to CAD so cost, residual value and amortization read in Canadian dollars. The Asetavo subscription itself is billed in US dollars, so your card issuer converts each charge and the CAD amount can vary slightly with the exchange rate. Starter is free, so there is nothing to convert while you test.

Official sources

Tax and reporting rules change. These are the official pages behind the general context above (checked 2026-10-09). They are not tax advice: confirm the treatment of your assets with your accountant or tax adviser.

Questions from Canada buyers

Asetavo can run a reducing-balance tax profile per asset at the rate your accountant gives you, beside book amortization (Business plan). The CCA schedule by class, including half-year adjustments, stays with your accountant.
