Decline in value, effective life and the ATO’s two methods

The ATO calls depreciation the decline in value of a depreciating asset. It is worked out over the asset’s effective life using either the diminishing value method or the prime cost method, and eligible small businesses may be able to use simpler depreciation rules, including the instant asset write-off, whose threshold and dates are set by legislation for each income year.

In Asetavo, diminishing value is the reducing-balance method and prime cost is straight-line. Either can sit on an asset’s tax profile while the book profile follows your accounting policy, so cost, the date the asset was first used or installed ready for use, and disposals are recorded once. Your tax agent decides which assets qualify for which treatment.

General information only. Thresholds, effective lives and small business rules change; confirm the current position on ato.gov.au and with your accountant or tax agent.

End of financial year

The stocktake before 30 June

Most Australian organisations close their books on 30 June, so the asset stocktake lands in May or June, when finance wants a register that matches the floor before the accounts and the tax return are prepared.

  1. Split the estate

Create an audit for each site, depot or campus, or narrow it to a floor or room.

  2. Count with what you have

Phone camera in the browser, a handheld barcode scanner, or a UHF RFID reader for bulk reads on the Business plan.

  3. Clear the exceptions

Mark missing items as found, still searching or written off, and add anything unregistered.

  4. Send finance the file

Export the variance and the closing register to Excel or CSV.

Choosing asset register software in Australia

Australian buyers often start from a software directory and a spreadsheet they have outgrown. Asetavo lets you import that spreadsheet through the Excel/CSV wizard, label the assets with QR codes from the free plan, and add RFID, maintenance and depreciation only when you need them. Compare it with other tools on our comparison pages.

Currency

AUD in the register, US dollars on the bill

Choose AUD as the workspace currency and every cost, written-down value and report reads in Australian dollars. The Asetavo subscription is charged in US dollars, so the AUD amount on your card statement moves a little with the exchange rate. The Starter plan is free.

Official sources

Tax and reporting rules change. These are the official pages behind the general context above (checked 2026-10-09). They are not tax advice: confirm the treatment of your assets with your accountant or tax adviser.

Questions from Australia buyers

Yes. Reducing balance (diminishing value) and straight-line (prime cost) are both available on book and tax profiles, among eight methods (Business plan).
